University Senate: Notes from 12/7/96 and 1/25/97 meetings; and notes from Faculty Council
Because some information related to Senate and Faculty Council meetings is available in On Campus and other sources, I will focus only on a few issues I consider important.

An issue that has been discussed in both bodies is Responsibility Based Management. It is unclear exactly how this might be implemented, but one aspect of this that I think important is the need for all faculty to become better informed about resource allocation issues. This has been an issue largely decided upon by administrators. Without question, deans and department chairs must ultimately make such decisions, but there should be faculty input. However, without information, there can be no meaningful input from the faculty.

I am attempting to provide some information, by converting spreadsheet tables for each department in the college to the Acrobat format. If the Acrobat Reader has been installed for your web browser (Netscape) you can view and print out these tables. For those of you can not obtain these tables in this way, ask me or your department chair for a copy of the tables.
PLEASE NOTE: The university plans to post these table in Acrobat format, so I will not finish posing our college tables. Click on the following to see Family Relations & Human Development

Another issue that is being discussed is evaluation of administrators. It appears that there will be a formal process of evaluation of many central administrators (vice presidents, etc.) This process may be similar to the requirement of student evaluations of faculty -- it will formalize a process of input, but not necessarily determine whether an administrator continues in office.

Faculty Council will seek a similar system for evaluation of deans and, perhaps, associate deans. (I doubt whether it is worthwhile to have a formal process of evaluation of associate deans, as long as deans are held accountable.) As with the current process, ultimately the provost would make the decisions. However, an evaluation committee, including faculty, would issue a report which would be open for all to see.
